Diversity and Oppression in a Higher Education Classroom: The Discoveries of a Faculty Learning Community
The Community of Inquiry on Diversity and Oppression in the Classroom engaged the instructional faculty of Norfolk State University in an exploration of the emerging diversity on the campus and the existence of oppressive classroom practices and policies impacting the academic, personal, and social growth of the students. Through a series of roundtable discussions on race and class, physical and mental disabilities, and gender and sexual identity, faculty and staff provided valuable insight and recommendations for change involving instructional delivery methods, assessment tools, instructor-student communication, student-student communication, curriculum materials, and ground rules for class discussion.
